Greening the Event

The BEST Awards Breakfast highlights sustainable business in principle and in practice. Not only is the event organized to honor local companies that model sustainable business strategies, the BEST breakfast itself showcases sustainable event practices.

The 18th annual BEST Awards Breakfast will be held at the Hilton Portland and Executive Towers. The Hilton Portland & Executive Tower is Green Seal Certified and practices sustainable business operations by:

  • Making energy improvements including compact fluorescent light bulbs and motion-sensored thermostats in all guest rooms, a state-of-the-art HVAC cooling tower, and 85% high-efficiency natural gas boiler.
  • Water conservation through low-flow toilets and showerheads.
  • Recycling and waste prevention through guest and staff recycling; participation in food donation programs and the Portland Composts! program; donations of older linens, furnishings, dishware, and toiletries for re-use; and double-sided printing on post-consumer recycled paper.
  • Sustainable purchasing focused on recycled-content products, minimal packaging, and local and organic foods.

The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability also minimizes resource consumption in the production of the BEST Awards:

  • The BEST Awards plaques are clocks made from recycled bicycle parts, designed by Resource Revival, Inc. of Mosier, Oregon.
  • The BEST Awards commissions Friends of Trees to plant a commemorative native tree in honor of each award winner.
  • Native plant centerpieces can be planted by guests.
  • Printed programs are eliminated and replaced by an introductory slideshow at the start of the event.
  • Commemorative 2010 BEST Awards notebooks are made from reused paper.

Other small businesses in Portland should use this program because it’s an excellent resource. It’s the one place to go and get answers to questions about many different green topics. If you don’t know who to ask, call BEST Business Center. They’ll connect you.
