In 2010, the Port of Portland completed our new headquarters building, a three-story, 200,000 square-foot office space on top of a seven-story parking garage at Portland International Airport. Both the office space and the parking garage were designed to reduce energy use, conserve water, and use sustainable building materials. The office space is estimated to use 36 percent less energy, and the parking garage estimated to use 78 percent energy, than their similarly-sized counterparts. Other notable features include onsite wastewater treatment and a 10,000 square foot ecoroof. Port staff systematically archived, recycled, and repurposed materials, preventing an estimated 100 tons of unwanted materials from becoming trash. Preparations were designed to be fun, with friendly competitions between departments and themes like Extreme Makeover: Cubicle Edition. Records Coordinators hosted events on appropriate records management as well as recycling. This effort helped set the stage for practices at the new building, which include all-plastics recycling, food waste composting, an on-site worm bin, and a goal to become a zero waste facility.
